Two girls run into each other in the hallway at school, this is their conversation.
Girl 1: “Hey, what are you doing?”
Girl 2: “Not much, just getting ready to head home. What’s up?”
Girl 1: “Oh nothing, I was just going to see what you were doing Friday.”
Girl 2: “We have no plans yet.”
Girl 1: “Well you do now. We are going to John’s cousin’s house to play darts and drink clam diggers. I’m calling one!”
Girl 2: “Okey dokey, it’s a plan.”
Girl 1: “Yay, I’m so excited, we haven’t hung out in forever. You guys will get along well with Jon’s cousin too.”
Girl 2: “Cool, sounds fun.”
Girl 1: “So I’m studying for my Sociology exam later.”
Girl 2: “Sounds fun, I’m going to be studying for an exam myself.”
Girl 1: “Well, I thought you said you still had your old flash cards and notes from Soc right?”
Girl 2: “Yeppers.”
Girl 1: “Well would you mind if I borrow them? Do you have the old tests too?”
Girl 2: “Yea you can borrow them, I have to find them first though. The exams won’t help you, I know she changes them every year and from what I remember, we had the exam and an answer sheet so it won’t help you.”
Girl 1: “Oh okay, that’s fine. I would still like to borrow your notes and stuff.”
Girl 2: “Sure, no problem.”
Girl 1: “Okay, thanks. I am going to get ready and then come over later, probably around 7:30 or so, is that okay?”
Girl 2: “That would be fine. Maybe we can hang out for a little bit?”
Girl 1: “Great, see you later.”
Girl 2: "Okay, bye."
Both girls leave the room.

Test Preperation #2
Scansion-the process of examining a poem to determine its meter.
This is a link to a YouTube video that I found helpful:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WnlZBZPp38
Test Question:
Scan the following sentences:
The whiskey on your breath
I wandered lonely as a cloud
So oft have I invok'd thee for my muse
Does he ever wonder where I am?
By the sea, by the sea, by the beautiful sea.
Down by the sea, by the beautful sea.
These examples were discussed in class or were given in the text.

Test Preperation
Alliteration vs. Assonance
Alliteration-the repetition of the same consonant sounds beginning each word in a sequence of words.
Assonance-the repetition of internal vowel sounds without the repetition of consonant sounds used as an alternative to rhyme in verse to create an aural unity within a poetic line or sequence of lines.
This is a link to a YouTube video that I thought would be helpful:

Howl Imitation
Frustration
I saw the minds of my generation waste their lives away having children just so they can make their money by living off the Government.
Who skipped class to spark up and still managed to get good grades, even though they were hardly ever in class and never did their homework.
Who decide they are not worthy so they tramp around looking for attention from whoever will give it to them.
Who will drive around the parking lot for 20 minutes, just to get 'princess parking' when they could be done with their grocery shopping if they would have just parked in the first spot they saw.
Who will sit in the drive thru of some fast food joint instead of going inside to get their food, and the people that got off their ass to go inside are done eating before they even finish ordering in the drive thru.
I saw the minds of my generation killing their classmates because they are having a bad day.
Who wage war against their friends instead of their enemies, in turn making more enemies and eventually losing every friend they ever had.
Who are living on the streets because after they graduated with college debt the economy crashes and they have no other choice.
Who have had such a horrible life that the only thing that makes them feel normal is meth, or whatever is available when they need their fix.
Who would rather spend $4/gallon on gas to fill up their gas guzzling polutant than walk the mile to get where they are going.
I saw the minds of my generation spending their days watching pointless television instead of going outside to enjoy the fresh air.
Who would rather send 20 texts back and forth instead of picking up the damn phone and having a 2-minute conversation.
Who would rather skim their Facebook or play with their 'Apps' instead of enjoying the company of those around them.
Who sit at their computers playing online games, instead of having a real social life, they choose to have a social life with characters and other online gamers as if it is real life.
Who sit and watch "Jersey Shore" and decide they want to be like those ridiculous people, getting drunk and acting stupid, like that is supposed to be glamorous or something.
I saw the minds of my generation make very poor decisions and we are told "This is the generation that will change the world" as if these people are going to make a difference.

Imagist Poem
The Strength of the Owl
Talons penetrate the victim,
like a machete slicing through butter.
Talons penetrate the victim,
like a machete slicing through butter.

Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Cup of Coffee
I
As the coffee pot is percolating
The grounds blending with the water
The steam rising.
II
They become one
A drink
So delicious, I cannot resist.
III
The coffee is done brewing now
The only thing I'm craving.
IV
The grounds and the water
Are one.
The grounds and the water and I
Are one.
V
The sweet aroma of it,
Do I put suger?
Do I put cream?
How about both?
The perfect cup of coffee.
VI
Sitting in my livingroom,
Enjoying every last drop.
As the rain is coming down outside,
I get to bask in the glory of its essence.
Life's simple pleasures
From the comfort of my own home.
VII
As the cup is nearing an end,
I ponder
And pour another.
How could I resist
Such a sweet temptation?
VIII
More alert now,
I wonder what the day will hold.
I do know one thing,
My day is better now.
Oh the wonders of a cup of coffee.
IX
Such a simple way
To mingle with other people.
Everybody enjoys a hot beverage.
X
I call my friend to come join me,
She would never refuse.
As we sit together,
We reminisce.
XI
Both now enjoying the flavors,
Such a simple thing in common.
The coffee is nearing an end,
Shall we brew another pot?
And the coffee prevails again.
Percolation begins.
XII
This time I go for black,
Amazingly delicious, no matter how I prepare it.
XIII
As we savor our time together,
My friend and the coffee and I,
I will never forget these moments.
Wonderful coffee, wonderful company.
Until we meet again.

The grounds blending with the water
The steam rising.
